OUR HISTORY
Mt. Calvary AME Church is located in the Yorkdale Subdivision of the Acres Homes Community in Houston, Texas. The property was acquired in 1951 by the Rev. J. B. Felder, who along with his wife, planted this church in the community. Rev. M. L. Dawson was appointed pastor of the church in 1963. The following year in 1964, it was decided that the current facility was in such disrepair that it needed to be demolished and replaced. Thus, Rev. Dawson moved the building that was owned and occupied by Ward Chapel AME Church, a sister church, located in the northern corner of Acres Homes, to 6415 Goldspier Street, the location of Mt. Calvary AME Church. Ward Chapel built a new facility. Mt. Calvary has been under a number of pastors who have been assigned by the Texas Conference AME Church over the years. Rev. Brenda Arnold-Scott is the current pastor. Under her leadership, all vacant lots surrounding the church, have been acquired. She has hope for a great future. Mt. Calvary AME church is in transition. We are preparing to meet more than just the spiritual needs of the community. Our vision is to erect a new facility that will also serve as a resource center in the heart of this community that still is alive; and in need of more than just a spiritual presence. We are excited about the future and extend an invitation to those who will to come and grow with us. We are planting and watering. God has increased our territory. God will increase us, as well as our ministry presence in the community, in the Houston, and throughout the world.
